Field Trip
On Tuesday, May 2, 2000, Jo Ann and I took 25 students, grades 2-6, from the Academy School out to hunt for Pecos Valley Diamonds. We met the students and four chaperones at 8:00 AM at the school. The group carpooled to the site.
We warned the kids to watch out for snakes, gave each of them a "diamond" to help them in their search, paired them up, and explained how to look for the diamonds. Kids and chaperones alike were enthusiastic. We moved among the groups, helped individuals, and collected a few diamonds ourselves - we gave them to the school principal at the conclusion of the hunt.
The trip was to conclude at 1100, but everyone was having so much fun the picking did not stop until noon. By then they had all happily collected a small bag of varied quality diamonds. The students and chaperones loaded up and headed back to school for a late lunch, but not before the principal got a commitment from us to do It again next year and to add a second trip for grades 7-8. The school planned to have someone come in to help the students make Mother's Day gifts with some
of their diamonds. -Bob Brooks
